Family Tree Digital Video

Many people will know something about family tree creation and creating a genealogy, but the idea of capturing it all on video is still somewhat new.

This is one of those family tree ideas that is a great way to finish off any genealogy project! In this article we will look at what you need to do to make it all come together. It’s pretty simple for anyone who has knowledge of how to use a video camera. It’s a great way to share memories and historical family information with others, as well as to make sure that you have captured your future in a very secure medium. You can have copies in your home, and make sure to post the video on the internet for back-up, preferably on your online genealogy page.

Let’s get started by assuming that you’re starting from scratch. That you don’t have any information with you. What you need to do is gather information as far back as you want to go. You need to start researching your family tree. This information will need to be a bit livelier than if you were just documenting; you will need maps, videos of living people and anything that you come across that you think you can film. As you do this don’t forget names, dates and events.

Get all your old aunties and uncles ready for their “20 minutes of fame”!  You can discuss what they should say in advance so that you know what you’re getting. If there are older people who can’t do very well in front of the camera, get them to be helped along by a younger person.

Some of the people who will come up may already be dead – it’s ok to talk about them if they are relevant. Get photos of them and maps of where they used to live, and scan them and get ready to film them using your video camera. Try to recreate lives with speech if you can’t get anything else. Friends and neighbours of departed relatives can tell you lots you didn’t know. It’s a good idea to have a voice recorder other than just your video recorder – it will help you recreate lives later when you’re on your own.

In some cases, if you can travel to far places where relatives lived so that you can record what kinds of lives they had, you should.

As you look for information, you can look for newspaper clippings in the relevant offices to find relevant stories. Look up military records as well because many people served in the 2 world wars in one capacity or another. Also, don’t forget to look up all the other types of archives that are available like online databases and government and church records.

Now you have all the information you need. You are ready to start putting it all together. Scan all your images and get them ready for filming. Make sure you categorize appropriately – get generations separated and references properly sorted. It assists to label everything. It will save you time and give you coherent flow as you narrate your story for the video camera. Enhancements, like music that belonged to a particular era will help give your video a more interesting feel. You can also put in subtitles if you have the right software.

There is nothing to stop your creativity. Keep going until you’re happy that you’ve done the best that you could!

And then share it.
